The Government to Address Additional Charges on 5G Network Users

The Malaysian government is taking steps to resolve the issue of additional charges imposed on 5G network users. Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has acknowledged that some local mobile network operators (MNOs) are charging extra fees or imposing premiums on subscribers for 5G network usage, in addition to their regular phone bills.

To address this concern, Minister Fahmi will be meeting with MNO CEOs to coordinate efforts in finding a solution. He understands the frustration expressed by users, as they question why they have to pay for 5G when the transition from 3G to 4G was free.

In addition to resolving the issue of additional charges, the government plans to address other matters through discussions with MNOs. The aim is to ensure affordable 5G packages are available to the public.

As of the end of July, 66.8% of populated areas in Malaysia have been covered by the 5G network. The government aims to achieve 80% coverage by the end of this year or early next year. Once this milestone is reached, two entities, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and another entity yet to be announced, will be allowed to operate 5G services.

Meanwhile, the government hosted the Islamic Digital Economy (IDE) Industry Conference 2023 to foster collaboration and partnerships within the Islamic digital economy sector. IDE is one of the key sectors that supports fair distribution of wealth and resources, in line with the Malaysia Madani vision. It is also one of the nine promoted sectors under the Malaysia Digital initiative.

Malaysia’s Halal ecosystem, which encompasses Halal food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, Muslim-friendly tourism, media, and recreational sectors, has played a significant role in the country’s leading position in the Global Islamic Economy Indicator for nine consecutive years. The Islamic digital economy is expected to reach a global value of US.7 trillion (RM35.79 trillion) by 2025.

To drive industry involvement and innovation, the government has introduced MD Tasree`, a platform that promotes the generation of ideas, groundbreaking innovations, and the commercialization of technological solutions in support of the Malaysia Digital initiative.
