The City of Warren Approves 5G Technology Installation Regulations

The City of Warren in Michigan has finally approved an ordinance that regulates the installation of 5G technology. The ordinance was passed by the Warren City Council after a public hearing where feedback was gathered. The issue was first presented in April 22, and the city hired outside counsel for assistance due to the complex nature of state and federal laws in this space. The city’s Planning Commission recommended the adoption of the ordinance before it was presented to the council.

During the meeting, Councilman John Wortman proposed an amendment to remove language that would require the technology to be placed on city property, which would have brought additional revenue to the city. Wortman argued that the experts should decide where to place the technology without having to prove why it can’t go on city property. However, Councilman Maurice Cashman and Councilwoman Wendy McCain insisted on keeping the provisions, citing the revenue potential.

City Manager Mike Holtz stated that similar ordinances in other places have similar stipulations, and Director of Codes and Planning Randy Rossey confirmed that it would not impose an undue burden on companies looking to expand their network in the city. Despite the amendment being rejected in a 4-3 decision, the ordinance was ultimately passed by the same lineup of council members.

The regulation of 5G technology installation has been a subject of debate in Warren for over a year. Supporters of the ordinance believe that it will enhance communication in the city and contribute to its growth, while opponents argue that the focus should be on making Warren the best place for communications technology, regardless of the revenue potential.
