Tata Play Collaborates with NewSpace India Limited to Increase TV Channel Capacity

NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), has partnered with Tata Play, a direct-to-home (DTH) service provider, to expand the broadcasting capabilities of their satellite. The Gsat-24 satellite, launched specifically for Tata Play, will now be used to beam television channels across the country.

The Gsat-24 satellite, a 24-Ku band communication satellite weighing 4,180 kg, was launched from French Guiana on June 22, 2022. All of the satellite’s capacity has been leased to Tata Play, allowing the DTH service provider to increase its carrying capacity to 900 channels. This expansion will enable Tata Play to reach even remote areas such as the Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands.

The collaboration between NSIL and Tata Play aims to enhance the viewing experience for DTH subscribers. With the increased bandwidth, Tata Play can provide users with sharper picture and sound quality. Currently offering 600 channels, Tata Play’s capacity will now be expanded to accommodate 900 channels, benefiting the public.

The launch of Gsat-24 and its collaboration with Tata Play is seen as a milestone in India’s telecommunications space. It demonstrates the country’s aerospace prowess and marks its successful entry into the demand-driven mission segment. This achievement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of privatisation and the establishment of NSIL.

The partnership between NSIL and Tata Play is also a testament to India’s “Make in India” initiative. By utilizing indigenously produced satellites and advanced digital TV transmission capabilities, Tata Play is committed to supporting domestic broadcasting services.

The collaboration was applauded by government officials, including Apurva Chandra, the Secretary of Information and Broadcasting. Tata Play’s Managing Director and CEO, Harit Nagpal, expressed how this collaboration will improve the viewing experience for DTH subscribers and strengthen their commitment to linear TV in a country where millions of households are yet to own a television.

Through this partnership, Tata Play and NSIL are poised to revolutionize India’s satellite television industry and provide a wider range of channels and services to DTH subscribers across the country.
