SpaceX’s Starlink to Provide Communication Links in Gaza, Says Elon Musk

Elon Musk announced on Saturday that SpaceX’s Starlink will support communication links in Gaza with internationally recognized aid organizations. The Gaza Strip has been facing a telephone and internet blackout, isolating its people from the world and from each other as Israel’s air and ground assault continues to widen.

The blackout, which started on Friday evening, has aggravated an already desperate situation in Gaza. International humanitarian organizations have highlighted that it hampers lifesaving operations and obstructs their ability to reach out to their staff on the ground.

It is worth noting that Starlink satellites have previously played a crucial role in providing internet connectivity in certain areas during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Despite attempts by Russian forces to disrupt internet services, Starlink’s satellites were able to maintain connectivity.

Elon Musk has also stated that he refrained from extending Starlink coverage over Russian-occupied Crimea. He made this decision to prevent his satellites from being used in Ukrainian attacks on Russian forces in the region.

The inclusion of Starlink’s communication links in Gaza will provide a much-needed lifeline for aid organizations. It will enable them to maintain contact with their staff on the ground and enhance their ability to carry out critical operations amidst the ongoing crisis in the region.
