South Korea Conducts Air Raid Exercise as North Korea Prepares for Rocket Launch

South Korea recently held its first air raid exercise in six years as a preemptive measure against potential threats from North Korea. The exercise took place as North Korea prepared to launch a space rocket carrying a satellite.

During the exercise, civil defense sirens were activated throughout the country, and 216 vehicles were deployed to simulate the evacuation of civilians in emergency situations. The drill involved the participation of around 480 multiuse facilities. Notably, hospitals, as well as subway, train, aircraft, and ferry services, continued to function without disruption.

It is worth mentioning that the drill was not conducted in the 57 regions that were recently declared special disaster zones due to heavy rainfall and the impact of Typhoon Khanun. These regions were prioritized for recovery efforts.

In previous years, approximately 17,000 sites, such as basement areas of apartments and subway stations, were designated as shelters for defense drills.

The air raid exercise lasted for about 20 minutes and was part of the four-day Ulchi civil defense training. This coincided with a joint military maneuver involving South Korea and the United States known as the Ulchi Freedom Shield.

The exercise serves as a preventive measure to ensure the readiness and preparedness of South Korea in the face of potential threats. The government aims to enhance the country’s defense capabilities and protect its citizens from any potential risks or attacks.

The exercise also highlights the ongoing tensions between North and South Korea and the efforts made by South Korea to maintain security and stability in the region.
