Samsung will be introducing satellite connectivity to its flagship phones starting next year. The announcement was made by Samsung’s Park Yong-in at the 2023 Semiconductor Expo (SEDEX). While specific details were not provided, it is likely that the Galaxy S24 series will be the first to feature this technology, following the release of the Galaxy S23 earlier this year.

Earlier this year, shortly after the launch of the Galaxy S23, Samsung revealed that it was developing modem technology to enable satellite communication. Although exact data transfer speeds were not disclosed, Samsung conducted simulations of 5G satellite communication using an Exynos Modem 5300, which is reportedly used in the Google Pixel 7 phone.

Satellite connectivity is not entirely new in the smartphone industry. Apple introduced this feature with the iPhone 14, allowing users to contact emergency services in situations where there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. This has been particularly helpful for individuals who get lost or injured while hiking in remote areas. Apple’s Emergency SOS feature collects relevant information from users and relays it to emergency services through a relay center.

Samsung’s deployment of satellite technology may include similar emergency communication capabilities. However, there are also reports suggesting that Samsung is working on the ability for users to send and receive messages through satellite connectivity in various situations, not just emergencies.

Apple’s satellite service has already proved vital in rescuing individuals in dangerous circumstances, including a family trapped during the recent fires in Maui. As Samsung prepares to introduce this feature to its flagship phones, it will be interesting to see how it enhances communication capabilities and benefits users in different scenarios.
