WFP, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), initiated the Walang Gutom (No Hunger) 2027 government food e-voucher programme in Tondo, Manila. The program aims to provide assistance to 3,000 participants with a food voucher digital card loaded with US (PHP 3,000) monthly for a duration of 6 months. This card can be used to purchase food commodities from registered retailers and smallholder farmers’ cooperatives.
Typhoon Doksuri, locally known as Egay, affected over 28,000 people (7,750 families) in Luzon, Central Visayas, and Central Mindanao. In support of the Government’s response, WFP mobilized 40 trucks to transport 56,500 family food packs, benefiting a total of 282,500 individuals. Additionally, WFP deployed Mobile Operations Vehicles for Emergency and Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) to restore communications in Abra, Northern Luzon.
WFP provided food assistance to 15,045 people (3,009 households) in Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur through the Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) activities. This included the distribution of iron-fortified rice to 11,250 individuals and cash assistance of US (PHP 3,000) to 3,795 people. The FFA participants engaged in various activities such as road rehabilitation, vegetable production, and irrigation canal construction to enhance socioeconomic opportunities for vulnerable and conflict-affected communities.
WFP also organized a workshop on the lessons learned from the Home-grown School Feeding (HGSF) project, involving the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education, as well as representatives from local government units. The workshop aimed to inform participants about the preparation of the 2024 Annual Investment Program (AIP) and the allocation of budget for HGSF implementation in BARMM.
WFP conducted a session called Nutrishow for 900 FFA participants in Maguindanao to provide them with social and behavior change communication messages related to dietary diversity. Nutrishow also offered corrective feedback on topics such as the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding.
WFP actively participated in the National Zero Hunger Summit, where they presented the global hunger and food security situation. The summit brought together stakeholders working towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
Furthermore, WFP supported the Department of Education in the School Meals Coalition Member State Working Group Regular Meeting, presenting the progress made on commitments within the Coalition.
In anticipation of El Niño, WFP supported the DSWD and the Department of Agriculture in the conceptualization and coordination of the Local Adaptation to Water Access (LAWA) project. This government early action project aims to provide cash assistance to project participants while they establish community watersheds and small farm reservoirs to address water scarcity during dry spells.
As an implementing agency of the Green Climate Fund Project on Multi-Hazard Impact-Based Forecasting and Early Warning System, WFP participated in the 2nd Project Technical Working Group Workshop with key government agencies. The workshop aimed to finalize the work and financial plan for the project’s first year of implementation.
WFP collaborated with the Department of Health in a writing workshop to develop their Humanitarian Supply Chain Management Course. Technical guidance was provided by DSWD, the Office of Civil Defense, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization to assist in curriculum development.
