Openreach Offers Special Promotion on Bandwidth Upgrades for UK ISPs

Network access provider Openreach has introduced a special promotion aimed at UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The offer allows ISPs to upgrade their customers on Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and SOGEA broadband lines to a maximum download speed of 80Mbps (with an upload speed of 20Mbps) at a reduced cost.

Running from 4th September 2023 to 4th March 2024, the promotion aims to assist ISPs in upgrading customers on slower 18/2Mb, 40/2Mb, 40/10Mb, and 55/10Mb packages to the top 80/20Mbps tier on hybrid fibre lines. It offers a waiver of the usual bandwidth modify charge during this period, including bulk upgrades. Additionally, Openreach will provide a rental price discount, ensuring that the lower rental price continues to apply for six months after the bandwidth modify order is completed.

However, it’s important to note that the offer does not apply to existing services affected by Openreach’s WLR Stop Sell and FTTP Priority Exchanges. Openreach aims to encourage users to migrate from copper-based lines to full fibre in these areas.

ISPs that don’t wish to continue paying the full 80Mbps rental charge after the six-month period will have the option to downgrade back to lower speeds by placing an order. The reduced rental charge will apply until the relevant date.

While the promotion may be appealing to consumers in areas without access to modern Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) options, it’s worth considering the limitations of FTTC lines. Signal degradation over distance means that many premises may struggle to achieve speeds close to the maximum 70-80Mbps offered by the promotion. As a result, these lines may not benefit significantly from the offer.

The availability of the promotion to consumers ultimately depends on ISPs choosing to pass it on as an option. However, Openreach typically launches offers in response to interest expressed by ISPs.
