North Korea Attempts and Fails to Launch Spy Satellite, Plans Third Attempt in October

North Korea has made a second unsuccessful attempt to launch a spy satellite, according to state media reports. The launch was carried out using the newly developed Chollima-1 rocket, with the first and second stages performing normally. However, an error in the emergency blasting system during the third-stage flight led to the failure of the launch. Despite the setback, the North Korean space agency has announced plans for a third launch attempt in October, after assessing the cause of the failure.

The United States, South Korea, and Japan have all condemned the launch, citing its violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions that prohibit North Korea from using ballistic missile technology. The U.S. administration, in particular, has expressed concerns over the heightened tensions and potential threats to regional stability. The Biden administration is currently evaluating the situation and will take necessary measures to safeguard the security of the U.S., as well as its allies South Korea and Japan.

North Korea’s objective in launching a spy satellite is to enhance its space-based surveillance capabilities, especially in monitoring U.S. and South Korean military activities. The country had previously attempted a launch on May 31, which ended in failure when the rocket carrying the spy satellite crashed into the sea shortly after liftoff. This failure was acknowledged by North Korea as a significant setback.

The recent launch comes at a time when the U.S. and South Korea are conducting annual military exercises, which North Korea perceives as a threat. The country has denounced these exercises, claiming that they increase the risk of nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula. In response, North Korea has resumed weapons tests, including the test-firing of strategic cruise missiles.
