Monterey County Office of Education Brings High-Speed Internet to Rural School Districts

Staff from the Monterey County Office of Education’s Information Technology and General Services Department recently visited Bradley Elementary School to prepare for the installation of AT&T’s fiber-optic network.

The team from MCOE, including Network Systems Engineers, a Manager of Maintenance and Operations, and the Chief Technology Officer, conducted a work-site preparation on July 26. This involved installing an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and adjusting and mounting new cables in the school’s attic and roof lines.

MCOE has been focusing its efforts on providing high-speed internet to rural school districts. So far, they have brought high-speed internet to five school districts, including Graves, Lagunita, Mission, San Lucas, and now Bradley.

It has become evident, especially during and after the pandemic, that many small rural school districts face challenges due to inadequate bandwidth. With the increasing use of Chromebooks and tablets in classrooms, schools require greater connectivity.

In the past, schools like Bradley School in southern Monterey County relied on fixed microwave wireless solutions for connectivity, which became outdated and unreliable over time. MCOE recognized the need for modernization and, whenever possible, provided fiber connections to improve internet access.

Thanks to the efforts of the consortium, these rural school districts now have access to high-speed internet, enabling them to utilize advanced tools and teaching methods for the benefit of their students.
