Mass Murderer Anders Behring Breivik Sues Norwegian Government over Prolonged Isolation

Anders Behring Breivik, the mass murderer responsible for the death of 77 individuals in Norway in 2011, has filed a lawsuit against the government, claiming that his human rights have been violated during his prolonged confinement in extreme isolation. Breivik’s lawyer, Oeystein Storrvik, announced this development on Friday.

Breivik has been in extreme isolation for 11 years, with no contact with anyone except his guards. He is currently serving the maximum sentence of 21 years, the highest permissible under Norwegian law. This act of violence in 2011 marked the worst peacetime brutality in Norway’s history, and there is a possibility of extending his sentence if he continues to be seen as a threat.

After spending the initial nine years of his sentence in Skien prison, Breivik was moved to Ringerike prison last year. However, even there, he remains in strict maximum security conditions, including solitary confinement. Storrvik expressed disappointment with the conditions, stating that they had hoped for better and for Breivik to be able to interact with others.

In 2017, an appeals court overturned a previous decision that had found Breivik’s living conditions to violate his rights. The government argued that his influence on inspiring others necessitated his isolation, but compared to the US, his living conditions are relatively comfortable. He is allowed to engage in video games, use a computer without internet access, exercise, and study for a degree in political science.

Breivik applied for parole last year, but it was denied as he was still considered a threat to society. The judge emphasized his lack of empathy and compassion for his victims and his refusal to take responsibility for his actions.

The next hearing for Breivik’s legal action is scheduled to take place in the Oslo district court next spring.
