Major Overhaul of Indiana Law Enforcement Training Academy Underway

Indiana’s law enforcement training academy is undergoing a major overhaul. Republican Governor Eric Holcomb and other state officials gathered at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Plainfield to break ground for the construction project. The renovations will include new technology, dormitories, a training village, and an emergency vehicle operations course. These improvements aim to enhance scenario-based training and provide in-depth instruction to future officers. It is worth noting that the ILEA trains nearly two-thirds of the state’s law enforcement officers.

The million project, approved by state lawmakers in 2021, has experienced a 22% cost increase due to inflation. Despite the additional funding required, Governor Holcomb emphasized that the state is not bonding or borrowing, which eliminates interest payments and saves money. He highlighted other ongoing capital projects in Indiana, including the recently completed Fall Creek Pavilion, a new state archives building, a new Westfield Correctional Facility, and renovations of the Indiana School for the Deaf and Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Governor Holcomb stressed the importance of prioritizing public safety and referred to the new law enforcement training center as “world class.” He believes that investing in the training and education of law enforcement professionals is crucial for community development, economic development, and workforce development. Starting salaries for state troopers have also increased to ,000 per year, as approved in the state budget. This salary raise addresses the issue of low pay for state troopers, who complete twice as many hours of training as other law enforcement professionals in the state.

The renovations at the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Academy and the salary increases for state troopers reflect Governor Holcomb’s commitment to improving law enforcement in Indiana. These efforts aim to provide the highest standard of training and support for law enforcement officers in the state, ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
