Hurricane Hilary Builds and Heads Northward

Off the coast of Baja California in Mexico, Hurricane Hilary is gaining strength as it moves along its path. Starting as a tropical storm on the southwest coast of Mexico, it rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane by Thursday morning. The International Space Station captured video footage of the storm as it loomed in the distance, showing its immense size. The video, which has been sped up, illustrates the buzzsaw-like clouds slowly approaching the horizon.

Visible satellite imagery also captured Hurricane Hilary as it came into view early Friday morning. The storm, spinning in a clockwise direction, is expected to make landfall in Baja California on Sunday at 6 a.m. According to the National Hurricane Center, by the time the hurricane reaches the southern tip of California, it will have weakened back to a tropical storm.

The oncoming storm is anticipated to impact areas such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas, with rainfall amounts of up to 2.5 inches expected for each city. The National Hurricane Center has classified Los Angeles as having a slight risk of flash flooding, while Las Vegas is at a moderate risk. In southwest Utah cities like St. George and Cedar City, rainfall totals are expected to be between one to two inches. Flash flooding is also a slight risk for these cities, starting from Sunday into Monday.
