FCC Launches Transparency Initiative for Satellite Applicants

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a new transparency initiative for satellite applicants. As part of this initiative, the FCC will be hosting an open house event on November 1st. The purpose of the event is to provide satellite applicants with information and support their engagement with the FCC.

Interested parties will have the opportunity to participate in both in-person and online sessions during the event. They can ask questions about the FCC’s procedures for securing authorization for satellite and earth station operations.

As part of the transparency initiative, the FCC is also creating applicant guides and explanatory documents on frequently asked questions. These documents will cover various topics, including space and earth station licensing processes and timelines, orbital debris, and special temporary authority (STA) applications. The first guide will focus on the FCC’s space station licensing process.

This transparency initiative comes as the FCC is making changes in how it deals with commercial space companies. Last year, the FCC established a Space Bureau, and recently, it adopted new rules to expedite the processing of space and earth station applications. Currently, the FCC has over 56,000 satellite applications pending, which is double the number it had four years ago.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the importance of understanding how to be a part of the growing space economy. She stated that increasing competition in the space sector benefits everyone, and maintaining U.S. leadership in this field is crucial.

Stay updated on future developments by following the FCC’s transparency initiative and taking advantage of the resources provided for satellite applicants.
