Ericsson Begins Production of 5G Equipment in Malaysia

Ericsson has officially started the production of 5G radio equipment in partnership with a company in Penang, Malaysia. This facility, located in Perai, marks Ericsson’s first production site for the latest mobile technology in Southeast Asia. The factory will manufacture 5G Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios in collaboration with Flex, a global manufacturer operating in 30 countries.
David Hagerbro, the head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, highlighted that the company’s investment in Malaysia is part of its efforts to support the country’s ambition to become a digital leader. Malaysia is an important market for Ericsson, and the establishment of domestic manufacturing will contribute to the local economy through job creation and the transfer of technical knowledge to the local workforce.
In July 2022, Ericsson announced its plans to produce 5G equipment in Malaysia to cater to both the domestic and regional markets. This decision was made during a meeting with former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Additionally, Ericsson was selected as the sole equipment supplier for Digital Nasional Berhad’s wholesale 5G network, a government-founded initiative. In April 2023, the government approved the establishment of a second wholesale 5G network.
Digital Nasional reported that by the end of 2022, 5G coverage had reached nearly 50% of populated areas, benefiting approximately 15 million people. Ericsson’s production facility in Malaysia will play a crucial role in expanding and improving the country’s 5G infrastructure, providing advanced mobile connectivity for businesses and individuals alike.
