Elon Musk’s Companies Provide Aid to Hawaii Wildfire Victims

Elon Musk has announced that two of his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, are making efforts to help the people of Hawaii, particularly those affected by the devastating wildfires in Maui and the town of Lahaina.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 16, Musk stated, “Tesla & SpaceX/Starlink doing our best to be helpful to Hawaii.”

Following Musk’s announcement, Starlink, a division of SpaceX, shared details of their actions in Hawaii. The company revealed that they have shipped and distributed over 650 kits to more than 40 organizations on the island to support recovery efforts and provide connectivity in Maui. This was in response to a post on X about Red Lightning Disaster Relief setting up free wifi for the wildfire victims.

Red Lightning Disaster Relief, in a LinkedIn post, expressed their own efforts to bring internet connection to Lahaina. They purchased 20 Starlink systems and successfully set up multiple systems, with plans to continue setting up more in the coming days. The organization emphasized the crucial need for communication in areas where power lines are down and connectivity is scarce.

Starlink has taken responsibility for covering 35% of the hardware costs and is collaborating with local retailers to offer their devices at a reduced price. Through expedited shipping and distribution, the company ensured that all kits delivered to recovery efforts in Maui were promptly received. Their goal is to make Starlink available below cost in partnership with local retailers.

According to reports from Fox Business, Starlink provides internet services utilizing a network of satellites in low Earth orbit. Their kits include pre-connected equipment that can be easily installed or mounted near the ground level to establish an internet connection.

Through these initiatives, Musk’s companies aim to support the people of Hawaii in the wake of the wildfires, providing vital connectivity and assistance during this challenging time.
