Dish Network is actively pursuing an acquisition to enhance its efforts in building a nationwide wireless network. The satellite TV provider is currently in discussions with T-Mobile to acquire a significant portion of spectrum. The specific spectrum being considered is in the 800 Mhz range, which falls under the low band category known for its wide coverage but average speeds.

The two companies, Dish and T-Mobile, have had an intertwined relationship since the merger of T-Mobile and Sprint in 2020. As part of that merger, Boost Mobile was spun off to Dish, and a wireless reseller agreement was secured. This was done as part of the government’s initiative to establish a new competitor in the industry, resulting in Dish gaining wireless customers from Sprint. However, Dish has been gradually developing its own nationwide service while experiencing a decline in wireless customers. With a debt burden of billion, Dish still needs to meet additional milestones for wireless coverage, including reaching 75% of the nation by 2025.

The acquisition of the 800 Mhz spectrum, previously owned by Sprint, would aid Dish in expanding its coverage to these additional regions. This low-band spectrum is particularly suitable for covering large areas, and its lower frequency enables better indoor coverage by effectively penetrating walls.

Notably, Dish is planning to make the official purchase of the spectrum on June 30, 2024, suggesting that funding arrangements are still being finalized. The company is facing challenges with rising interest rates and the gradual decline of its core satellite TV business, as evidenced by a loss of 294,000 subscribers in the second quarter.
