Transport for NSW Trials Free Wi-Fi at Nambucca Heads Station

Transport for NSW is conducting a trial of free Wi-Fi at Nambucca Heads station, utilizing Starlink low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. The choice of LEO satellite service is due to the station being located in a cellular blackspot. The free Wi-Fi service is available for a maximum of 60 minutes per day, per user.

Vernon Buckle, the customer environment manager at NSW TrainLink, has reported positive feedback from rail users regarding the new service. This feedback will be used to understand how passengers utilize the technology and to make any necessary adjustments to improve future passenger offerings.

Improving passenger experience is a priority for Transport for NSW. Providing reliable digital connectivity can enhance the overall passenger experience, especially at regional locations where wait times between connections can be lengthy. The trial will serve as a proof-of-concept to determine if this technology can be applied across the entire network.

The three-month trial is a collaborative effort between Transport for NSW and the NSW Telco Authority. The NSW Telco Authority has been exploring LEO satellite services since August 2022 to potentially extend its P25 trunked radio technology. The trial is part of the authority’s ongoing next generation digital connectivity project.

Transport for NSW will actively monitor the free Wi-Fi service during the trial period. Any technical or performance issues that arise will be promptly addressed and resolved.
