The Upcoming Changes to the Pixel 8 Camera App

Google is planning some significant changes to the camera app on the upcoming Pixel 8. While this may cause a bit of a learning curve for long-time Pixel phone users, it promises to enhance the overall experience.

The Pixel camera app is already regarded as one of the best on the market, capable of producing excellent photos even with older hardware. The Pixel 8 camera will feature a larger sensor, the Samsung ISOCELL GN2, allowing for about 35% more light capture compared to the previous model. Additionally, the ultrawide camera on the Pixel 8 will be upgraded to a 64MP Sony IMX787 sensor.

However, the most noticeable changes will be in the app itself. The menu carousel, which allows users to switch between different modes, will be replaced by a simpler two-button switch for Camera or Video. Once a selection is made, the traditional Carousel with various options will be accessible.

The positions of the camera switch and gallery button may also be swapped, requiring users to adjust their workflow. The Settings popup, usually accessed from the upper left corner, will now be brought up by swiping up on the screen.

Moreover, the Motion tab will be split into two options: Long Exposure and Action Pan. The Cinematic Pan stabilization mode will be simplified to just Pan. If you were familiar with the old Pixel Stabilization modes, they will now appear in a popup menu with three choices: Standard, Locked, and Active.

These changes aim to make the Pixel 8 camera more powerful and streamline the photo-taking process. While long-time users may need some time to adapt, these adjustments have been long overdue.

Overall, Google’s efforts with the Pixel 8 camera app seem to prioritize simplicity and efficiency without compromising on photo quality.
