The Perseid Meteor Shower Captured an Impressive Sight: SpaceX’s Starlink Satellites

The Perseid meteor shower, known as the best meteor shower of the year, recently captivated skygazers with its shooting star-like space objects falling from the night sky. However, it was a satellite “train” that stole the show in Hawaii. The Subaru Telescope in Mauna Kea captured a video of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites moving through the sky, and the footage has since gone viral.

The video, filmed on August 11, was shared on the Subaru Telescope’s official YouTube channel. The group of 15 dots in the horizon were identified as Starlink satellites according to the BBC. This “special live” video coincided with the peak days of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The description accompanying the video mentioned that the satellites were remarkably bright and impressive. The Perseid meteor shower is visible from July to September, with its peak strength typically occurring on August 12 or 13. It gets its name from the Perseus constellation, as the meteors seem to originate from that location.

The Subaru Telescope, located near the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, is a large optical and infrared telescope. Its primary mirror has a diameter of 8.2 meters, making it one of the largest monolithic mirrors in the world. The telescope’s prime focus provides an exceptionally wide field of view compared to other large telescopes.

The video captured by the Subaru Telescope showcases not only the stunning Perseid meteor shower but also the awe-inspiring sight of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites. The footage serves as a reminder of the wonders that can be observed in our night sky.
