The Nigerian Communications Commission Denies Allegations Regarding MAFAB Communications’ 5G Service

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has denied allegations claiming that MAFAB Communications’ 5G service is not operational. The NCC issued a rejoinder to a social media claim that accused MAFAB of failing to launch their 5G service after two years.

According to the NCC, MAFAB obtained their 5G license in February 2022 by paying 7.6 million. MAFAB, along with MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, bid for the licenses, but only MAFAB and MTN were successful on that day. Airtel obtained their 5G license the following year.

Following the acquisition of the license, MAFAB officially launched their operations in Abuja on January 24, 2023, and in Lagos on January 26, 2023. The company intends to set up shop in six cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Kaduna.

The NCC stated that they monitor MAFAB’s operations and that the company provides frequent updates on the status of infrastructure deployment for their service offerings, as required by the license conditions.

Concerns were raised on social media by Abubakar Sidiq Usman, who stated that MAFAB had not rolled out its 5G service nearly two years after obtaining the license. The NCC responded to the claim, asserting that MAFAB’s 5G service is fully operational. However, this response raised doubts for some social media users, who questioned the authenticity of MAFAB’s 5G launch.

MAFAB’s website does not provide detailed information about the cost of 5G bundles or tariff plans, which further contributed to doubts about the company’s credibility. Some commentators expressed skepticism about the selection process for obtaining the license and raised concerns about MAFAB’s ability to deploy its 5G network, suggesting that they may need to sell their spectrum to other telecom operators if other alternatives fail.

To dispel doubts and gain trust, it is suggested that MAFAB issue an official statement corroborating the NCC’s claims and showcase feedback from customers using their 5G service. Until such actions are taken, doubts about MAFAB’s 5G availability are unlikely to fade.
