The Malaysian government has decided to address the lack of internet access in certain areas by utilizing the services of satellite internet providers such as Starlink. While long-term solutions are being implemented, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that satellite internet is a suitable temporary solution due to its plug-and-play nature, fast internet speed, and reasonable pricing.
In addition to Starlink, Malaysia is home to three other satellite internet service providers. Fahmi emphasized that the decision to utilize this technology is not driven by commercial interests, but rather by the benefits it offers to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The government is also in discussions to expand satellite internet technology to schools and health clinics in Sabah and Sarawak. Fahmi is coordinating these efforts with Health Minister Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, and Rural and Regional Development Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim previously announced plans to install 40 satellite internet devices from Starlink at higher education institutions nationwide. This initiative aims to assist students who struggle with unreliable internet connectivity, and it follows a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Ibrahim and Starlink CEO Elon Musk.
In addition to the satellite internet solution, several telecommunication service providers are expected to offer a 5G Rahmah internet package at a more affordable price, or with increased data capacity. This package, priced at RM60, will provide 60GB of data per month and is set to be implemented on August 31. Companies may offer variations of this package with lower prices or higher data capacity options.
The Malaysian government’s use of satellite internet providers is a temporary measure to address internet access issues. Efforts are also being made to expand satellite internet technology to schools and health clinics, while offering more affordable 5G internet packages to the public.
