Telstra and Ericsson Announce Australia’s First Implementation of Next Evolution of 5G Technology

Telstra and Ericsson have announced the successful implementation and validation of the next evolution of 5G technology in Australia. This milestone was achieved by using Ericsson’s pre-commercial Reduced Capability (RedCap) software on Telstra’s 5G commercial network, along with a MediaTek RedCap testing device.

The companies showcased one of the new 5G features, Voice over New Radio (VoNR), by making a voice call in Box Hill, Victoria. This call, which utilized the frequency division duplex (FDD), marks the beginning of ongoing testing and validation of this new 5G capability on Telstra’s network.

RedCap is a cutting-edge 5G capability that builds upon the progress made in 4G IoT technologies such as Cat-M and Narrowband-IoT. It offers several benefits, including reduced device chipset cost, complexity, and power consumption. Additionally, it supports higher data rates and enables key 5G services via 5G standalone.

This Australian first VoNR call using RedCap on Telstra’s commercial 5G network demonstrates how the software can enhance the functionality of wearables like smartwatches. It also introduces several new service capabilities, including longer battery life, augmented and virtual reality functionality, and enhanced video monitoring.

Telstra Group Executive for Global Networks & Technology, Nikos Katinakis, expressed excitement about the opportunities this evolution of 5G technology brings for intelligent IoT devices. He highlighted the added value that can be delivered to customers by using less power.

Emilio Romeo, the Head of Ericsson in Australia and New Zealand, praised Telstra’s initiative in paving the way for new 5G use cases and enhancing the capabilities across consumer, industrial, and enterprise devices. The collaboration between Telstra, Ericsson, and MediaTek in making this Voice over New Radio call showcases their commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and bringing greater 5G capabilities to the ecosystem.
