Telecommunication Service Providers Committed to Narrowing Digital Divide

Telecommunication service providers in Malaysia are dedicated to supporting the government’s Madani Economy framework by ensuring affordable connectivity and devices. They have pledged to work closely together as an industry to further narrow the digital divide.

In a joint statement, five major telecommunication service providers – CelcomDigi Bhd, Maxis Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (Unifi Mobile), U Mobile Sdn Bhd, and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (Yes) – welcomed the government’s recent announcement regarding the launch of Pakej 5G Rahmah and Insentif Postpaid Rahmah Penjawat Awam. These initiatives, in conjunction with Bulan Kebangsaan, aim to provide accessible packages to customers. The launch is scheduled for August 31, 2023.

Yesterday, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil instructed broadband Internet service providers to reduce Internet prices starting in September. This move is in line with the implementation of the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP), which is expected to lead to a decrease in Internet wholesale prices and the availability of cheaper packages.

These efforts by the telecommunication service providers and the government are aimed at bridging the digital divide in Malaysia, ensuring that affordable connectivity and devices are accessible to all. By making Internet services more affordable, the government hopes to promote digital inclusivity and empower more individuals and businesses to thrive in the digital economy.
