Strange Lights Over North Texas Were Just Elon Musk’s SpaceX Satellite

On Aug. 7, 2023, residents across North Texas witnessed a peculiar set of lights in the sky, leading many to believe they were witnessing a UFO. However, it turns out that the mysterious object was actually a satellite launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The satellite, called Starlink, was visible over North Texas at around 9 p.m., sparking fear and excitement among Texans. WFAA meteorologist Pete Delkus addressed the claims, confirming that the lights were from Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite. These satellites provide a breathtaking sight as they move across the sky, appearing like a dazzling “train of lights.”

Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite constellation aims to provide high-speed broadband internet to areas where internet access is limited. With over 2,300 satellites currently in orbit, SpaceX plans to launch many more in the future to expand internet coverage.

Interestingly, this was not the first time that the Starlink satellite was mistaken for a UFO. In September 2022, a similar panic ensued when Starlink-55 flew across the Texas skies.

Texas has a long history of UFO sightings, as documented by writer Pamela Colloff in her 1969 Texas Monthly story, “Close Encounters of the Lone Star Kind.” Reports of UFO sightings in Texas date back to 1878, with the first one supposedly touching down in 1897, more than half a century before the infamous Roswell incident.

In recent years, Texas has gained national attention for several notable UFO sightings. In 2013 alone, there were 7,182 reported UFO sightings, with three specific sightings drawing widespread attention. These included jailers at Johnson County Correctional Facility reporting a UFO with a unique triangular shape.

If you’re interested in observing the Starlink satellite, you can check the website Find Starlink to find out when and where the lights will be visible. On Aug. 8, 2023, at 9:45 p.m., the satellite is expected to be visible from Collin County.
