Oklahoma Human Services Opens Smart Home Demonstration Sites for Families with Developmental Disabilities

Oklahoma Human Services, in collaboration with ABLE Tech and Bethany Children’s Health Center, have recently opened two Smart Home demonstration sites. These sites have been created to showcase remote support and enabling technologies for families on the Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS) waitlist, as well as families already on DDS waiver services.

A Smart Home is designed to allow individuals to control appliances, thermostats, lights, and other devices remotely using a smartphone or tablet connected to the internet. These demonstration sites include fully functional living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms to highlight how enabling technologies can enhance the quality of life and independence for individuals with developmental disabilities.

In addition to showcasing remote support, the Smart Home demonstration sites also feature assistive technologies. These technologies include wheelchair ramps, voice-controlled devices, and other accessibility features that promote greater independence and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

By opening these Smart Home demonstration sites, Oklahoma Human Services aims to provide families with firsthand experience and understanding of the benefits and possibilities that enabling technologies can offer. This initiative is particularly valuable for families on the DDS waitlist, as it allows them to see how these technologies can improve their loved ones’ quality of life while they wait for DDS waiver services.

Overall, the Smart Home demonstration sites serve as a resource for families and individuals with developmental disabilities to explore and learn about the various technologies available to support their unique needs. It is a stepping stone towards creating more inclusive and accessible environments for individuals with disabilities in Oklahoma.
