Modders have recently introduced two new tools, OMGVflash and NVflashk, which have the potential to revolutionize GPU overclocking. These tools have managed to crack a security feature on Nvidia GPUs, allowing overclockers to flash new vBIOS files to their graphics cards.

Around ten years ago, Nvidia implemented locks on their GPUs. Graphics cards operate under the control of a vBIOS, which determines factors like power limits, maximum clock speed, and thermal shutdown thresholds. Prior to Nvidia’s GeForce 900-series GPUs, extreme overclockers could flash a new vBIOS onto their GPUs to achieve higher performance levels. However, Nvidia introduced an on-chip security processor that prevented this functionality.

Now, with the release of these two tools, the ability to flash new vBIOS files has returned. Developed independently by members of the TechPowerUp forums, both tools have undergone rigorous inspection to ensure they are virus-free.

Apart from enabling tinkering, these tools can also enhance the performance of more affordable graphics cards. Often, different brands sell models at similar prices, where the only distinction lies in the vBIOS file. With these tools, it is possible to cross-flash different vendor vBIOS files onto your graphics card.

However, it is important to exercise caution when considering flashing a new vBIOS onto your GPU, especially if you own a high-end graphics card. Doing so will void your warranty and can potentially damage your GPU. Flashing a new vBIOS means you are operating the graphics card outside its recommended parameters, which can lead to damage without adequate cooling. Additionally, on RTX 20-series GPUs and newer, the vBIOS also determines the power limits, increasing the risk of overheating and damage.

OMGVflash is compatible with RTX 20-series GPUs and older for cross-flashing, while NVflashk allows for more flexibility. It attempts to flash any BIOS file, even allowing for the example of flashing an RTX 3060 vBIOS onto an RTX 4090, although success is not guaranteed. NVflashk was initially created to successfully flash a 1,000-watt vBIOS onto an RTX 4090.
