Minister to Meet Mobile Operators Over 5G Charges

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil plans to meet with local mobile network operators to discuss the issue of additional charges for accessing the 5G network. Fahmi stated that while not all operators charge extra, he intends to coordinate with CEOs to address customer concerns.

During the initial rollout of 5G, users in covered areas had free access to the network on existing mobile plans. However, in recent months, several major carriers have started to restrict certain offerings to 4G only and introduced additional fees for 5G access.

Fahmi’s wife pointed out that when the country transitioned from 3G to 4G, customers did not have to pay extra. This raises the question of why operators are now charging more for 5G, which Fahmi aims to investigate.

CelcomDigi introduced a 5G booster that requires customers on postpaid plans costing less than RM90 per month to pay an extra RM10 for access to the faster network. A similar requirement applies to prepaid plans, unless customers choose a new and more expensive plan that includes 5G. Yoodo, CelcomDigi’s sub-brand, also implemented an additional RM5 charge across all plans.

Maxis, a recent entrant to the 5G market, launched a range of 5G plans and has made 5G accessible through an access pass for current package users. Postpaid users will be charged RM10, while prepaid users will be charged RM5.

Fahmi’s upcoming meetings with mobile network operators aim to clarify the reasons behind the additional charges and find solutions to address customer concerns.
