Indiana State Police carried out multiple search warrants on Wednesday at a residence owned by the former Clark County sheriff in Jeffersonville. The home, located on Old Tay Bridge, was cordoned off with crime scene tape, and several ISP cruisers were present at the scene. While the specific details of the investigation were not disclosed, property records indicate that the house is owned by former sheriff Jamey Noel.
According to court records, Noel and his wife purchased the property in October of last year, with a 30-year mortgage. Indiana State Police spokesperson Capt. Ron Galaviz mentioned that the warrants relate to allegations of public corruption, tax evasion, fraud, ghost employment, and official misconduct. Current Clark County Sheriff Scottie Maples issued a statement revealing that evidence of potential criminal behavior was discovered during a review of the previous administration. Maples referred the evidence to the Indiana State Police for an impartial and independent investigation.
Earlier in the evening, firefighters from Jeffersonville were seen using chainsaws to cut through an item on Noel’s property. The contents of the item remain unknown. Boxes were also observed being removed from the residence.
In addition to his role as the former sheriff, Noel serves as the chief and CEO of New Chapel Fire and EMS, a service provider for Clark and Floyd counties. Search warrants were also executed at three fire stations associated with the organization. New Chapel Fire and EMS Assistant Chief Matt Owen assured that they are cooperating with the investigation and that their day-to-day operations will continue uninterrupted.
Noel is also the chair of the Clark County Republican Party. WDRB News reached out to Noel for comment, but there has been no response as of yet.
