Former Code Enforcer Arrested for Damaging Cable and Vehicle

On Wednesday, a former Marion County code enforcer, Marion Dan Richardson, was arrested by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for allegedly causing damage to a Horry Telephone Corporation (HTC) cable and a vehicle. The incidents resulted in the disruption of internet service for a resident and significant damage to a 2006 Chevrolet HHR.

Richardson, 58, faces charges of larceny, malicious injury to utilities, and malicious injury to personal property. According to the arrest warrants, Richardson unlawfully damaged an HTC cable that provided internet service to a residence, which prevented the remote monitoring of the residence’s surveillance system.

It should be noted that Richardson neither owned the surveillance system nor was he the HTC account subscriber. Additionally, on April 1, Richardson caused extensive damage to a 2006 Chevrolet HHR by breaking its windows and entering the vehicle. Video surveillance footage and witness statements acquired during the SLED investigation supported this information.

This is not the first time Richardson has faced criminal charges. In 2021, he was charged with 31 counts of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. In 2016, he faced a misconduct in office charge after allegedly shooting and killing 14 cats that were taken from the Marion County animal shelter.

Marion Dan Richardson has been booked at the Marion County Detention Center, and his case will be handled by the 12th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
