Ericsson Inaugurates First 5G Manufacturing Facility in Southeast Asia

Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson has opened a new manufacturing facility in Malaysia dedicated to producing 5G radio equipment. This facility marks Ericsson’s first 5G manufacturing site in Southeast Asia. The radio equipment being manufactured in Malaysia includes Ericsson’s Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios, produced in partnership with global manufacturer Flex.

The establishment of this facility contributes to Malaysia’s local economy through employment opportunities and the transfer of technical knowledge to the local workforce in areas such as manufacturing, product engineering, and equipment testing. David Hägerbro, head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, stated that the company’s production of 5G radio equipment in Malaysia was part of their commitment to supporting the Malaysian government’s ambition to become a digital leader.

Ericsson has been selected to build Malaysia’s national 5G network through Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), a special-purpose vehicle created by the previous Malaysian government for deploying and managing the country’s 5G network. The new government plans to launch a second 5G network in 2024.

In addition to its new facility in Malaysia, Ericsson has also announced an investment of 9 million to build a next-generation smart manufacturing and technology hub in Tallinn, Estonia. The hub aims to consolidate Ericsson’s operations in Estonia into a single 50,000-square-meter facility, facilitating the co-development of cellular ecosystems and production techniques with customers and partners in Europe. The hub is expected to be operational in 2026.

Ericsson’s commitment to 5G technology is evident as it recently announced shipping 10 million 5G-ready radios worldwide. The company’s networks power 147 live 5G networks worldwide, with approximately 50% of 5G traffic outside of China running on Ericsson’s networks.
