EM Solutions Completes System Level Test for Telesat’s LEO 3 Demonstration Satellite

Communications manufacturer EM Solutions has successfully completed the system level test for a transponder developed for Telesat’s LEO 3 demonstration satellite. The satellite payload includes both Ka and V-band uplinks and can downlink on either Ka or Q-band.

The transponder was specifically designed to be compatible with Space Flight Laboratory’s DEFIANT platform, which is a compact microsatellite measuring just 30x30x45 cm and weighing 30 kg.

The Chief Engineer at EM Solutions, Garth Niethe, expressed his satisfaction with the achievement, praising the collaborative efforts of EM Solutions’ design, test and assembly members, as well as the company’s suppliers and customers, SFL and Telesat. Niethe also highlighted the challenges faced due to the tight schedule and global component shortage issues.

The communications payload for the satellite was developed and manufactured at EM Solutions’ head office in Brisbane, Australia. The facility now includes a new ISO7 (Class 10000) clean room, expanded workstation areas, and wire bonding machines.

Niethe emphasized the company’s commitment to utilizing their expertise in microwave product design and manufacturing. He expressed the desire to leverage the successful research and development efforts in Q and V bands for future satellite transponder payloads and other applications.

EM Solutions, a subsidiary of Electro Optic Systems, has demonstrated its capabilities in the space flight hardware industry. The completion of the system level test for Telesat’s LEO 3 demonstration satellite further establishes EM Solutions as a reliable player in the communications manufacturing sector.
