Australian Telecom Firm Telstra and Ericsson Successfully Conduct First VoNR Call on 5G Network

Australian telecom company Telstra, in collaboration with Ericsson, has achieved a milestone in the country’s 5G technology evolution by successfully making a Voice over New Radio (VoNR) call. The call utilized Ericsson’s pre-commercial Reduced Capability (RedCap) software on Telstra’s 5G commercial network.

The VoNR call, conducted in Box Hill, Victoria, was carried out on frequency division duplex (FDD) using a MediaTek RedCap testing device. This marks the beginning of a series of testing and validation processes aimed at seamlessly integrating this new 5G capability into Telstra’s network.

Telstra Group Executive for Global Networks & Technology, Nikos Katinakis, expressed excitement about the potential benefits of this enhanced 5G technology, stating that it enables intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) devices to enhance everyday lives. Telstra is committed to providing customers with more value by utilizing this technology that consumes less power.

RedCap is a groundbreaking technology that builds upon the progress of 4G IoT technologies like Cat-M and Narrowband IoT. It offers several advantages, including reduced device chipset costs, simplified complexity, and lower power consumption. Additionally, it supports higher data rates and enables essential 5G service features through 5G standalone (SA).

The successful VoNR call demonstrates RedCap’s potential to enhance the functionality of wearable devices, such as smartwatches. RedCap opens up a range of innovative service capabilities, such as extended battery life, enriched augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences, and improved video monitoring solutions.

Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson, Australia and New Zealand, praised Telstra for paving the way for new 5G use cases and enhancing consumer, industrial, and enterprise devices that do not require the full range of 5G capabilities. The collaboration with Telstra and MediaTek to achieve this VoNR call pushes the boundaries of technology, bringing greater 5G capabilities to the ecosystem.
