AI-Generated Cyber Attacks Putting Defenders at a Disadvantage, Says Abnormal Security Co-Founder

When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, Evan Reiser, the co-founder of Abnormal Security, had mixed thoughts. He believed the technology was impressive and would benefit the world, but he was also concerned about the potential use of the technology by cyber attackers.

Abnormal Security, founded in 2018, focuses on detecting and preventing email cyber attacks using AI and machine learning. Reiser explains that the rise of ChatGPT and other chatbots has increased the sophistication of email attacks, and people are underestimating the power of the technology.

He believes that AI defenders will eventually come out on top, but currently, they are at a disadvantage. AI-generated cyber attacks have the potential to push cybersecurity in the wrong direction until defenses can catch up. However, Reiser argues that defender AI will have the advantage because they have access to both publicly-available data and internal private data from companies.

Abnormal Security recently released CheckGPT, a tool that helps companies determine whether a suspicious email was written using AI tools like ChatGPT.

Regarding funding, Abnormal Security is not planning to raise more at the moment. The startup was last valued at billion and has notable backers such as Greylock Partners, Insight Partners, and Menlo Ventures. Abnormal is smaller compared to cloud security startup Wiz, which focuses on protecting companies’ cloud infrastructure and is valued at over billion.

Reiser mentions that Abnormal and Wiz have exchanged information on what works for their respective companies, although they are not direct competitors.

Abnormal Security recently announced that they achieved 0 million in annual recurring revenue. They are currently focused on product investment and are intentionally not profitable. However, they anticipate becoming profitable in the near future.

Regarding an IPO, Reiser hints that it could be a possibility in a couple of quarters or a couple of years, but profitability would be a factor in deciding when to go public.

AI companies like Abnormal Security face the challenge of keeping up with rapidly advancing technology. The hope is that AI defenders will catch up and overcome the forces of AI-powered cyber attacks.
